Here and Now: June 2018

12 June 2018
Just like that it's June. The weather has shifted from chilly autumn into definite winter. The trees are mostly bare and their shed leaves collect around the garden (thanks mother nature for laying my mulch for me!).

Gloomy skies and (all but) bare trees)

It's hibernation time. I've shifted from the reflection of autumn to the feeling of being still. Most days find me wanting to curl up under my nanna rug on the couch with a pot of tea and a good book. Alas, the daily tasks still beckon no matter the weather, but there is a definite slower pace.

A recent everyday sourdough loaf (background post here)

Loving // Hot cups of tea and nanna rugs.

Eating // Plenty of soup and sourdough experiments.

Sourdough bagels - to be blogged about soon

Drinking // Lots of tea, a few hot waters and when the weather is not too arctic my daily cold coffee.

Feeling // Tired but content.

Making // New sourdough recipes and pickling olives.

A bounty of olives ready to be preserved.

Thinking // About so many things. Lots of day to day minutiae at the moment as well as big picture plans.

Dreaming // Of a warm wood fire - how I miss our Adelaide wood fire here in Canberra. There is nothing like the warmth of a good fire.

Two of our resident Magpies singing me a song and looking for a snack.

What's going on in your world right about now? Can you believe we are nearly half way through the year already?

  1. Your baking looks so good.
How nice to have fresh olives. Do you have olive trees in your garden?

    1. Hey Nil, no I don't have any olive trees sadly. But luckily there are plenty of trees around that non one uses - an easy forage find in my parts.

  2. Hi Laura,
I can relate to this post in so many ways. The weather here in Adelaide is cold and rainy at the moment. I have been doing a lot of baking -sourdough bread and rolls, banana bread, blood orange cake, scones and apple slice. Baking is a great way to keep our living area warm without turning on the heater. I too am dreaming of a wood heater especially one that can be used for baking and cooking.
Do you have a recipe for pickling olives? We have some lovely Kalamata olives ready for preserving.
The nanna rug, couch, book and pot of tea scenario is so appealing.
I love the photos you have shared and am really looking forward to your bagel post. Those bagels look amazing and I have bagels on my baking to do list.
    Cheers, Maria from Adelaide SA.

    1. Hey Maria,
Olive preserving post coming VERY soon (tomorrow in fact). I hope you find a method that works for you - definitely worth preserving your own.
The bagels turned out really well. My first attempt at sourdough bagels so I was very happy to find a good recipe first up.
Hope you are getting plenty of good garden rain down in Adelaide and keeping warm sans wood heater (one that can cook and warm is my ultiimate dream too!).
Have a good week and happy baking,
      Laura

  3. Your post is just brimming with wintry goodness, Laura! Pickling olives sounds like fun, and isn't sourdough experimenting the best? So many things you can do with it! Have you made crackers yet? They are yum!

Hope you're keeping warm, and thank you for joining in Here & Now again!

    1. Yes, so many great sourdough uses to be played with. Crackers are probably my standby with pikelets coming a close second.
